What is MOXI, and is it the right first laser? Here is the short answer, and then I will walk you through why.
MOXI is a gentle, fractionated laser that repairs skin from beneath a surface it never breaks. It corrects uneven pigment and refines tone and texture, with recovery measured in days. It works across skin types and in every season, so it serves as a first laser and as ongoing maintenance.
Picture skin that is just starting to show the years outdoors. There is a little unevenness from the sun, a few fine lines you notice in certain light, and a texture that was not there a few summers ago. For that skin, MOXI is where I would start.
The idea underneath MOXI, and where I already use it
The principle behind MOXI is one I rely on every week with Sculptra. Some of my patients lose a great deal of weight on a GLP-1, and they lose fat in the face along with it. The face starts to look a little sunken. Over three treatments, Sculptra prompts the skin to build its own collagen, and over the months that follow the face comes back to life.
The best aesthetic work gives the skin a reason to repair itself, then gets out of the way.
MOXI works on that same principle, at the surface of the skin. Once you understand the principle, the treatment stops sounding like a laser and starts sounding like what it is: a controlled, well-placed nudge to your own repair systems.
How a fractionated, non-ablative laser works
Fractionated means the laser delivers its energy in thousands of tiny, separate columns. Each column is a microscopic repair project, and each one is surrounded by untouched skin, which is what keeps the healing fast.
Non-ablative means the laser warms the skin and leaves it in place. The top layer stays intact, so there is no open wound and no raw surface to protect.
Your body reads each warmed column as a small injury and replaces it. New cells take the place of old ones, pigment that had clumped is broken up and carried away, and the texture underneath smooths as the repair fills in. That work runs for weeks after a session, so the result keeps improving after the mends are gone.
The wavelength does the targeting.
MOXI runs at 1927 nanometers, a wavelength absorbed by the water in the upper layers of skin, where sun damage and pigment sit. Classic resurfacing lasers reach deeper and remove tissue outright. That is the reason they carry a week or more of recovery.
What the first five days look like
The session fits inside a lunch hour. Your provider can use cooling air and can apply numbing cream if you would like it, though most patients find the treatment easy to tolerate.
The day after, your skin looks lightly sunburned. Look closely and you will see tiny dots across the treated area, called mends, one for each column the laser placed. Makeup goes on after 24 hours.
Between days three and five, the mends darken, feel briefly rough, and then flake away, and the skin underneath comes through renewed. Please keep a moisturizing physical sunscreen on and stay out of the sun through this stretch, because the new skin is doing its rebuilding and mountain light is unforgiving.
From there the improvement is gradual. Tone evens and texture refines over the following weeks, and a typical first course is three to four sessions, spaced about a month apart, so the repairs stack.
Why MOXI works across skin types and in every season
The gentler wavelength and the intact surface are what open MOXI to skin that stronger lasers have to treat carefully. Heat is what causes pigment to misbehave after a laser, and MOXI puts less of it into the skin, spread across thousands of small columns.
The research supports that. In a MOXI device study, women with skin types from fair through olive saw pigment and sun damage improve after two treatments. A separate study in Asian skin found the same wavelength safe and effective for sun-aged skin over three monthly treatments.
Season follows the same logic. An ablative laser opens the skin, so you wait for the low-sun months. MOXI leaves the surface intact, so with a few days of sun discipline it can be done in July or January.
Living here, that matters, because our sun does not take a season off.
MOXI as a first laser, and as maintenance
MOXI is the right first laser for two people. The first is the person whose skin is early: some unevenness, the beginnings of texture, sun that has started to register. The second is the person who has been curious about lasers for years and held back because of what a friend went through after an aggressive one.
What does a stronger laser buy you? A bigger single result, in exchange for a longer recovery and more risk, and for early skin that trade rarely makes sense.
Ablative resurfacing has its place, and if your skin has deeper damage than MOXI can answer, I will tell you so at the assessment.
Once a first course is done, MOXI settles into a rhythm. One or two sessions a year hold the ground you gained and keep clearing what the sun adds. That is how I think about every part of your health: Build it, then protect it.
MOXI and BBL in one session
MOXI has a partner on the same platform. BBL broadband light clears sun spots, redness, and small vessels, and MOXI refines tone and texture, so together they cover the full picture of sun-exposed skin in one appointment. The pairing suits skin that has both the color changes and the texture changes, and the assessment decides whether you need one or both.
The skin assessment comes first
Every laser treatment here begins with a skin assessment, and it needs no blood work and no waitlist. You and I, or you and Natalia, look at your skin together, talk through what you want to change, and build a plan around it. You leave knowing which treatment, how many sessions, and when.
I treat this the way I treat the rest of your care. Your whole health picture is in the room, hormones included, because skin reflects what is happening underneath it.
The assessment can also end with a smaller plan than you expected, or a suggestion to wait. If MOXI laser treatment is the right first step, we schedule it, and assessments are often available the same week.
Why the gentle laser comes first
The earliest signs of sun and age respond to the lightest touch. The whole point of a gentle laser is to begin before you need a strong one. The work stays small, the recovery stays short, and your skin spends the next decade being maintained, with nothing to rescue.
So the better question is not how strong a laser you need. It is how early you can start with a gentle one.
Your skin is always adding to the record. MOXI keeps clearing it.
